Guinea Pig Temperature

Guinea pigs can get heatstroke very easily. They also get very cold. Guinea pigs which live outside should ideally be able to come inside when the temperatures exceeds this range.

Celsius: 10-30 degrees

Fahrenheit: 86-50 degrees

That range should be okay, but outside that limit you should seriously consider brininging them inside.

Are Guinea Pigs Related to Pigs?

Why are guinea pigs called pigs? They are not related to them, so why? They are probably pigs because of the noises they make which sound abit like pigs. They are called "guinea" because they were traded for guineas, which is a type of currency from sometime in the past.

If you like, leave a comment asking about guinea pigs and on my next post I will answer it.

Can Guinea Pigs eat Zucchini?

This is very interesting. Some guinea pigs like zucchini and others hate it. My guinea pigs won't even nibble on it, but it isn't poisonous. If they have never eaten it before and you want them to like it, take them on your lap and offer a small piece to them. However, if they continually refuse just give it up.

Guinea Pigs and Dogs

Can guinea pigs and dogs get along with one another? Some dog breeds are more suited to this than others. Here is a list of how different kinds of breeds of dogs get along with guinea pigs (generally, this is only true for the majority of dogs).

  • Sporting breeds, like terriers and hounds. They are likely to view a guinea pig as prey and be tempted to hunt it. But they can be trained not to.
  • Herding/working dogs, like collies. These dogs might like to protect the guinea pig from harm and herd it.
  • Toy breeds, like poodles. They might think of the guinea pig as an equal because of their similar size and get along well with it, or simply ignore it.
If your dog has trouble withthe guinea pig introduce them to each other in neutralterritory with you close at hand. If you have any further inquiries, just leave a comment. You don't need a Google Account, anyone can comment as "Anonymous" or whatever you want.

Don't leave your guinea pig alone with your dog unless you are very sure they get along well.

Question:Should i get a 1 year old female guinea pig (who is used to being alone) and a 2 months old guinea pig, and keep them together?

Should i get a 1 year old female guinea pig (who is used to being alone) and a 2 months old guinea pig, and keep them together?

Dear Anonymous,

It depends on their disposition mostly. Usually sows get along well, so there probably wouldn't be much of a problem, but if any of them is rather feisty introduce them in a habitat (could just be a cardboard box with hay in it or something) which neither of them know. Follow the directions on the post about introducing an old boar to a young boar, and hopefully you'll get by fine.

I have introduced a few young and old sows to each other. One of the times, the older was used to being alone, but they were both quite cooperative with each other and settled in together fine. My two boars (they are more territorial, but I'll use them as an example) were introduced to each other and were fighting a lot at first due to the elder not being quite willing to share with the younger. I kept them apart, but allowed them little interactions with one-another regularly; they made friends and are now living together quite comfortably.

I think females would get along fine, introduce them properly and hopefully they'll soon be best friends! I've never had problems with females.

Question: If guinea pigs like to eat toast

Dear Anonymous,

In answer to your question, Guinea pigs can eat toast! But don't give it to them, it's quite unhealthy. Especially toast with spread on it.

When sows are pregnant, it is okay to give them some bread soaked in milk. But not toast soaked in milk!

Question:would an old giunea pig get aggresive with a baby(male) and was sort of jealus?

Dear linka,

In response to your question, it depends on the guinea pigs personalitys. The old guinea pig could get jealous with the baby, if the baby was getting special treatment while the old guinea pig wasn't. It would feel like it was being neglected in favour of the baby, and so it would get aggressive.

For old males, a young baby wouyld most likely try to cuddle it. Be careful, usually the males won't tolerate this. If fighting continues, refer to the post on 'Introducing old males to Young ones'.

I hope I answered your question!

How to Introduce Old Guinea Pigs to Young ones

Old Guinea Pigs
can be quite aggressive, when a young one comes to live with it. Since they’re
quite set in their ways, when other Guinea Pigs come to live with them, the
elder may even attack, leaving the younger with dangerous wounds.
Proper steps must
be taken for introductions between Guinea Pigs with a lot of age difference,
especially with males (boars), who are very protective of their territory.
Females (sows) aren’t so protective, but it’s still exquisitely important to
take the necessary precautions listed below.
1 Rub the young
Guinea Pig in straw/hay/bedding from the older one’s hutch/cage.
2 Introduce them
in a box which the younger has been brought home in, as then it will be its
territory, for young guinea pigs are lenient about such matters.
3 Give the Guinea
Pigs a carrot or food of that kind, divided in two portions so that they will
have some form of distraction, so that the only things in their environment is
each other, for then matters will likely turn into a fight.
4 If they will
live together, make a place in the hutch/cage where the young one can go if the
old one begins to bully it.
5 If the
interaction doesn’t work out, board up the cage in half (making d\sure they
each have a place to sleep), so it can be shared.
6 Supervise
interactions each day, until they become friends (they will, it’ll just take
time).
7 When they become
friends, take down the wall between their rooms, and let them live together.
If you follow
these precautions, it will be highly likely that your guinea pigs will become
friends, but if they don’t, don’t worry too much thinking about it. It will
happen in the end- you just need to let them have sessions together every day.
Incidentally, males are always very protective- so probably they will fight.
Remember, in the end they will gradually become friends, and come to respect
each other.
A trouble which
has been found when introducing boars to younger boars, is that the younger cuddles
the elder excessively, which the elder puts up with at first, but gets annoyed
later. Don’t try to do anything, just let them sort it out themselves. They
know what to do about this.

Guinea pig Activity Cycle

Guinea pigs are diurnal. This is the same as us humans, although they just snack through the day, whereas we eat proper meals.
You should try to set up schedules for guinea pigs, so that they will know when to expect meals, clean outs etc.

Living with a Rabbit

Guinea pigs should only live with rabbits if they know each other very well and you know the rabbit wouldn't hurt the guinea pig. Sometimes rabbits jump on the guinea pigs and the guinea pigs can get hurt. If they groom each other they are friends, however the rabbit may unintentionally hurt the guinea pig.
