Before we get onto guinea pigs, I would like to show you the three kinds of guinea pig fur.

  1. Short hair. These guinea pigs have smooth, shiny coats. This is the kind of fur that wild guinea pigs have.

2. Rough coat. These guinea pigs have rosettes in their fur. The rosettes are a parting of fur with strands pointing away from the centre in a circle shape.

3. Long hair. These guinea pigs have VERY long hair, sometimes so long they resemble a cushion if not cut. These guinea pigs require a lot of care.

Swiss Teddy

This guinea pig is Long Haired. It resembles a powder puff, a bit like a teddy (hence the name). They need a lot of care. These guinea pigs were first bred in the US. Unlike most long haired guinea pigs, Swiss Teddies have long hair coating their bellies. They look a lot like the breed Rex, but their fur is generally softer and fluffier. An adult Swiss Teddy can have hair 9cm long.

Dalmatian

When you look at one of these guinea pigs, you can immediately tell where these guinea pigs got their name. From the dog-breed dalmatian!

Awesome! I do not know anything about guinea pigs, much less their fur types.
